It’s not out of the question when you act as your own general contractor, without the typical 40-50 percent mark-ups on labor and materials general contractors usually charge. Working with their construction consultant, the consumer selects the items he or she wants for his or her home—e.g. windows, cabinets, flooring, etc.—as part of creating the estimate. That all but eliminates going over budget for any one phase of the construction.

“When you’re custom-building a home the traditional way, most contractors will offer a certain package that gives you X number of choices. For example, a bronze package at $150 per square foot might only allow you two styles of windows. So, if you want a higher grade of window or additional choices, you need to move up to the silver package at $175 per square foot, even if everything else remains the same. With the DirectBuy program, we comprise the estimate based on what you want so there’s very little chance of going over budget,” said Banks.
